Visiting tribal villages around Koraput, Lalita saw agricultural waste piling up and untreated water in use, and made one problem solve the other. Water passes through stacked layers of long cob pieces, small pieces, powdered cob, cob charcoal and sand. Her project report claimed 70 to 80 per cent removal of suspended solids, dyes, oils and detergents; that is a school-project figure, not a validated result. She won the Google Science Fair Community Impact Award in 2015.
