Bengaluru's lakes were foaming and catching fire. Pingali's observation was that the problem was under-measured rather than unknown, so she made measurement something residents could do: a low-cost testing kit paired with an app that pools readings into a live map. She took second place in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Intel ISEF 2017 and had a minor planet named after her by MIT Lincoln Laboratory. She went on to Stanford.
