Reading about electronic "smart sutures", Taylor asked what a low-income clinic could actually afford and screened natural pH indicators. Healthy skin sits near pH 5; an infected wound rises toward 9; beetroot pigment changes from bright red to dark purple across exactly that range. A cotton-polyester thread dyed in beet extract signals infection with no electronics, and is easier to read on darker skin than redness. She was a Regeneron Science Talent Search finalist in 2021.
