Paper nanotube sensor for a pancreatic-cancer biomarker (claims later disputed).

After a family friend died of pancreatic cancer, Andraka wrote to about 200 researchers asking for lab space; one at Johns Hopkins said yes. His dipstick coats filter paper with carbon nanotubes and antibodies to mesothelin, a protein over-expressed in the cancer; binding changes the paper's conductivity, read with a multimeter. He won the top award at Intel ISEF 2012 and a global speaking career followed.
The claims did not hold up. The work was never published in a peer-reviewed journal, senior scientists said the speed and cost comparisons used outdated baselines, and Johns Hopkins called the results highly preliminary. Andraka himself later described it as a proof of concept. He appears here because the episode is instructive, not because the device works.
