In the middle of South Africa's worst drought in decades, Nirghin asked why the superabsorbent polymers that could help farmers were petroleum-based and too expensive for smallholders. She boiled orange peel for its pectin, mixed it with dried peel and avocado skin, sun-dried the blend to cross-link it and ground it to a powder that holds many times its weight in water and releases it slowly to roots. She won the Google Science Fair grand prize in 2016.
