Antibody-quantum-dot probe for early Alzheimer's detection.

Born in Chennai and raised in Surrey, Nithiyanandam designed an antibody that binds an early Alzheimer's marker, oligomeric amyloid-beta, and to a receptor that helps it cross the blood-brain barrier, tagged with a light-emitting nanoparticle so a scan could flag the disease years before symptoms. It was an in-vitro proof of concept, not a validated diagnostic. He won the Scientific American Innovator Award at the Google Science Fair 2015 and later a Big Bang Fair prize for breast-cancer research.
