A Faster, Lower-Cost Way to Make Antiviral Medicines.
Adam Kovalčík developed a shorter route for producing aza-C-nucleosides associated with antiviral medicines. Starting with an inexpensive material derived from corn-husk waste, his process reportedly reduced a 15-step synthesis to 10 steps, improved output and greatly lowered the estimated material cost. The work also enabled him to create a related antiviral candidate for further study.
