Sydney West designed an intelligent remotely operated vehicle for coral-reef research and monitoring. An underwater robot can collect repeatable visual and environmental observations while reducing the need for frequent human dives in difficult conditions.

Innovation mindset: Design the instrument around the environment’s constraints—pressure, visibility and remote control—not around the comfort of the laboratory.

Official project title: The Design and Engineering of an Intelligent Remotely Operated Vehicle for Coral Reef Research and Monitoring (Robotics and Intelligent Machines).
