Teen innovators Chanyoung Kim, Eeshaan Dev Prashanth and Samuel Skotnikov developed NeuroFlex, a cost-conscious prosthetic leg that reads movement intent through a non-invasive EEG headband. The team built and tested the prototype with a single prosthesis user rather than in the abstract. Their prototype combined brain-signal interpretation, powered movement support and a more realistic ankle joint, correctly predicting the intended movement in 98% of reported tests.

Innovation mindset: Begin with one person’s lived difficulty, measure the hidden cause and design around the user instead of asking the user to adapt to the machine.

Official project title: NeuroFlex: A Cost-Effective, Non-Invasive EEG-Controlled Bionic Prosthesis for Transfemoral Amputees (Biomedical Engineering). Reported 98 per cent accuracy comes from a single-user test.

What this means for a student inventor in India
