Working in a UC Santa Cruz lab, Khare, from an Indian-American family in California, grew hydrogen-treated titanium-dioxide nanorods coated in a conductive polymer to build a supercapacitor electrode that charges in seconds and survives some 10,000 cycles. It won the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award at ISEF 2013. Media turned it into "a phone that charges in 20 seconds"; the device powered an LED. Report the ISEF project, not the headline.
